Simont’s harbor 2

Dedicated to the designer and builder
of the Russian naval base and harbor of Taganrog,
the Venetian captain, engineer Matthew Simont

Stood proudly he upon the hill
And dreaming: “Here the fleet shall be”.
For Peter’s triumph, for Russia’s fame
Matthew Simont built fortress there.

Box of stone between the poles –
Foundation of the fort.
The sketch was done, the work began –
The fortress and the port.

The task was hard, the goal was grand –
Axes, stones and rocks.
But for the fleet, for Peter’s need
Matthew “unlocked all locks”

Work was closing to an end
And – Glory! – This is it.
The final stone upon the wall
Is ready to be feet.

Thus Russia became empire!
Thus Peter became Great
And the fortress that HE made!
